After years of laboring as a Glasgow shipbuilder, a no-nonsense 55-year-old working-class man, Frank Redmond finds himself laid off. For first time in his life, he could be without a job or even a sense of management, and he's too proud to request guidance. His best teammates - cynical Eddie, timid Norman and rascally Danny - is there for him, but Frank feels alone. An offhand opinion from Danny inspires Frank to challenge himself. Already contemplating their condition of his connections with all-but-estranged son Rob and wife Joan, Frank is determined to shore up his or her own self confidence. He'll attempt the English Channel - swimming.
