The Quiet Duel
Toshiro Mifune plays the role of a young and idealistic physician who works at the clinic owned by his father (Takashi Shimura), which is located in a run-down and dangerous neighborhood. When he cuts himself while operating on a patient during the war, he becomes infected with syphilis from the patient's blood and catches the disease from the patient's blood. In spite of the fact that he is troubled by his conscience and secretly takes care of himself, he decides to break off his engagement to his distraught fiancée without providing an explanation.
