J.R. is a fatherless boy growing up in the glow of a bar where the bartender, his Uncle Charlie, is the sharpest and most colorful of a variety of eccentric and demonstrative father figures. As the kid's determined mommy has a hard time to give her kid with possibilities refuted to her-- as well as leave the shabby house of her horrendous if begrudgingly encouraging daddy-- J.R. begins to gamely, if not always beautifully, pursue his charming as well as specialist desires, with one foot persistently put in Uncle Charlie's bar.
