Deacons for Defense

This drama, which is based on a true tale, takes place in 1965, not long after the enactment of the Civil Rights Act. However, despite the passage of the Act, African-American citizens of Bogalusa continue to be treated as second-class citizens, with their fundamental human rights consistently violated by the white power structure in general and the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan in particular. After the struggles become too overwhelming, the story follows the formation of a group of local black men, particularly ex-war veterans, who form "Deacons for Defense," an all-black defense organization dedicated to patrolling the black section of town and protecting its residents from the more violent aspects of "white backlash."
