Episodes from World War II are depicted in two separate sketches. He becomes a hero in the first novel, "Scherzo all'Polacca," after his smart son, who was striving to keep his skin intact, finds a purpose in battling. As a precaution against the Warsaw uprising, he first steers clear of underground training. Drunkenness, disrespect for safety, and cowardice while sober come across as sane in the world of madness when they're expressed with humor. That he wants to live is more acceptable than that he wants to die. An attempt to escape from a prison camp is the subject of "Ostino lugubre" in the second novel, in which an ex-soldier who is fed up with the captivity and insanity of professional soldiers tries unsuccessfully to break out of prison.
