In the weeks leading up to Christmas, renowned but troubled writer Joseph Harris travels to a sleepy Michigan hamlet in order to stage his most recent work. A young aspiring writer introduces himself to the jaded New Yorker and challenges his literary idol to live up to the expectations he had for him as an icon. Harris has absolutely no interest in being the young man's hero and has no desire to have anything to do with Michigan or its small-town theater. As soon as he gets there, Harris immediately starts making his way back to New York City on the next available train. The young man, who is desperate and making last-ditch efforts to keep his hero in town, is forced to confront him and investigate the complex relationship that exists between the aspirations of youth and the experience of adulthood.
