North Korea: A Day in the Life

It is no coincidence that the film's urban settings and patriotic music stand in stark contrast to Seoul Train's desolate backdrop. This propaganda film was produced by Dutch filmmaker Pieter Fleury with the full assistance of the North Korean government, and it provides an intriguing look at life in one of the world's most mysterious cultures. The North Korean film bureau heavily influenced the plot of A Day in the Life, which chronicles the routine activities of a regular North Korean family and how they are used to promote North Korean national pride and General Kim Jong Il's legacy. The movie is supposed to be a celebration of modern North Korea. Yet does it? The lack of any commentary in Fleury's film leaves room for spectators to draw their own conclusions.
