Son of Lord Clancharlie, gwynplaine, has a smile carved on his face by the King, in revenge for the treachery of Gwynplaine's father. A travelling show man adopts gwynplaine and becomes a popular idol. He falls deeply in love with all the Dea. The king dies, and also his jester that is evil tries to destroy or corrupt Gwynplaine.
