The Ninth

At the turn of the nineteenth century, Petersburg was swept up in a wave of interest in occult studies and esotericism. On tour in the Russian Empire's capital, British medium Olivia Reed draws large crowds to her public spiritualistic meetings. In this period, the city is plagued by a series of strange ritual murders. Girls are kidnapped on the streets, and their mutilated remains are discovered throughout the city. Rostov, a young police officer, and his subordinate Ganin are in charge of the inquiry. Things become more perplexing with each each victim. Suspicion leads Rostov to Olivia, and he turns to her in the hope that her actual or fictitious power to summon the spirits of the dead will assist him in locating the killer.
