The Sweeney
The Sweeney is a branch of the Metropolitan Police specialising in handling armed robbery, just a British television police drama emphasizing two members of the Flying Squad and violent crime in London. The programme's name stems from Sweeney Todd, that can be Cockney rhyming slang for"Flying Squad".
The programme has been shot entirely on 16mm film by the film branch, Euston Films of Thames Television. It aired on ITV between two January 1975 and 28 December 1978 from the 9-10pm weekday slot together with showings at precisely the same time prior to the early 1980s. It starred John Thaw as Detective Inspector Jack Regan, and Dennis Waterman as his partner Detective Sergeant George Carter. Such has been its popularity at the UK that it spawned two theatrically released feature picture spin offs! and Sweeney 2.
The show aired for the Flying Squad that was reallife. From the late 1970s, the Flying Squad was publicly censured for being involved with bribery, authorities corruption and connections with the fraternity. Unlike the unwavering high standards found from the Sweeney, the Flying Squad's true commander, Detective Chief Superintendent Kenneth Drury was convicted of five counts of corruption and jailed for eight years on 7. An evaluation was launched to stamp out corruption. There were A additional 1-2 officers detained and others resigned.
